I think it is a must!  First learn Italian, locale italiano!  Do you have relatives to converse, and help with

that?  It will make it more of an experience!  Your Grandmother sounds like an amazing woman!  She

will be with you on your journey!  You should search to see if you have relatives in Italy, and maybe visit

the area where she was from originally. Secondly, as a travel consultant, will not suggest to drive in Rome

(unless you are use to it), but outside of Rome into the country side is beautifull!  In case, you will need valid passport, valid for travel in the exact name on your airline ticket, must match!  If you opt to drive, you will need

an international drivers license.  This can be obtained at any AAA location, cost is approximately $13.00, they

can do photo for the license, or I think it may reduce cost if you bring 2 passport size photographs with you.

Lastly, prior to going to airport, recommend to go to your bank to convert some dollars into euros, better

conversion rate than at the airport, for baggage handler tips, taxi ride and tip, and perhaps a bellman tip

at the hotel.
