Tarnished Jewelry
Got some jewelry out of storage and it’s heavily tarnished. It was wrapped in anti-tarnish cloth that obviously did not work. How do I remove the tarnish? Upsetting. It was good jewelry that looks awful now. Some of it has scroll work that will be difficult to get into the little nooks and crannies.

Lucy, I just found a throne for you. They sell it at Costco. It’s a "porcelain throne".
"Connects directly to water supply & standard power outlet. Massage wash, warm water and air wash with heated seating and auto flush. Includes LED nightlight and remote control."
What do you think? Should I order one?
She’ll take it if you can get one in animal print.

Sorry, no animal print. But I think I can get it in pink encrusted with crystals.
I also asked them to add a special feature. A handbag hook LOL

There are many ways to remover tarnish from jewelry from natural to chemical. It really depends on whether they are natural stones or created. Natural I would opt for baking soda and elbow grease and lots of time. What you will need aPlastic bowlToothbrush to get to the scroll workAluminum foilBaking sodaHot WaterPut a piece of tin foil at the bottom of plastic bowlAdd a few tablespoons of baking sodaThan bring some water to almost a boil, its key the water needs to be very hot but not boiling.Once the water is hot put water into bowl with foil and baking soda. You should see a chemical reaction it will bubble.Drop your silver jewelry in the mixture and swirl it around. (that is where you use your plastic brittles via a toothbrush to get into the nitty gritty of the grooves of the scroll work) Should take about 30 seconds.Because of the reaction it will smell like sulphur (rotten eggs)For pieces that are heavily tarnished you might need to do this a few times.Once done wash the piece in soap and water.Another tip do not use boiling water it will turn your silver black and you will have to polish your little heart out. Use water that is about to boil.

does it have gems, pearls, etc? Is it sterling or just silver tone or gold tone? That changes how you can clean it. If it’s not sterling, it might not come off. I use silver polish as long as there are not stones. I use sparkle sprkle on the stones, but find it doesn’t remove tarnish well.

For heavy tarnish on metal there is one fool proof product I have used professionally for 35 years with no problem. Just be aware that if you get tarnish on soft stones, such as turquoise, it will soak up the tarnish and cannot be removed. Clear stones are not usually a problem but with so many enhancements now, just avoid getting tarnish remover on stones.
There is a product called Mother’s Polish. It says it’s for chrome, but does copper, brass, silver, etc. It is in a white jar with red letters and is sold in the automative section of the big chain store that we all know and love that starts with a W. It is very inexpensive. The nice thing about it is you can control how much tarnish you remove. You can take off tarnish to keep a little patina, or keep polishing and get a high luster. The jar lasts a long time. Even if it dries out, the crust on top will still remove tarnish. The cloth that you use can even be used later as a buffing cloth because the residue, even though black, will bring a bright shine back to a lightly tarnished piece.
Here is a professional secret to determine if silver will polish. Us a Pink Pearl eraser on a spot. If it will erase, it will clean. If it will not erase, it will not clean. Items that have a finish over the metal will tarnish under the finish sometimes and cannot be polished. This is very true with many silverplated pieces like Brighton.
If your jewelry is really black, do not dip it. It will turn white and be extremely hard to correct. It will also ruin alot of stones and take the oxidation out of design elements. Dip is ok on solid sterling that is tarnished but not black, especially chains. Just don’t soak it, make it 2-3 second dip, rinse, and repeat if necessary.
If you really need to get into nooks and crannies, put the Mother’s polish in the crannies, let it sit for a bit, then wash with a wash cloth that has a good pile on it to get in the grooves. You can use soap and water on silver as long as you dry it well afterward. Moisture is the enemy there.
Try Mother’s before you take things to a professional for expensive cleaning. Sparkle Sparkle is good on stones and general grime. The Connoisiers (spelling?) cloths that come in a red box are also good for polishing light to medium tarnish. Store them in the box after they turn black and they still polish for a long time.
Save the silica packets that come in vitamins, shoes, handbags, etc. and put them in with your silver and they will help prevent tarnish. Never put anything rubber near your silver as it will make a hard to remove spot where it touches.
Hope these tips help. Good luck.
