Need Help Cleaning Jewelry

My jewelry has been sitting untouched, unprotected, for 4.5 years. I did not plan on neglecting it; I just couldn’t take care of it.
I have lots of costume jewelry made of plastic and fake metal. I also have some diamonds, gemstones, white gold, yellow gold, and sterling silver.
I’m not in a rush to wear anything today, but I would like to learn how to clean this up. I am a neat freak and feel like just throwing most of it away. I’ve been pretending it’s not there and feel overwhelmed.
I don’t know anything about safe cleaning methods or protective jewelry boxes. I used to use some cleaning solutions for gold and sterling, but I don’t remember what they were or if they were even any good. My rings r in a box that has some velvet lining, but I don’t know if it does anything.

Some suggestions:
Blitz set of 4 – 433-369. I have these and use them.
Sparkle Sparkle – 395-152. I do not have but keep meaning to purchase.
Colleens Jewelry boxes are wonderful.
Dont get the Over the door jewelry armoir only because it does not have the silver keepers (unless you want to add you own)
Has anyone tried the Baking Soda/Salt and Vinegar solutions? Does it work? harm stones?
I will try this with a silver bracelet that does not have stones this summer.

Colleen’s Prestige Jewelry boxes are the best around. I’ve been using them for years and never had a problem with tarnish. I use her bracelet, ring, necklace, earring and other boxes. I even use them for brooches. I do use them for silver and vermeil as vermeil will tarnish too. Don’t use Joy’s jewelry boxes as they don’t have tarnish protection. I like Sparkle Sparkle but sometimes need to use a heavy duty one. For that I’ve used Connoisseurs Precious Jewelry Cleaner for years…it’s available on the A site for about $8.00 and is what my jeweler recommends.
Be sure to check the fine print to determine which gems are safe to clean in whatever brand you decide to use. As VelveteenRabbit said, be sure to clean your jewelry before you store them in whatever storage system to decide to use. Be sure to put your jewelry on last after using hair spray, makeup, perfume, lotions, etc. I’m sure it can be overwhelming…just start with the pieces you are likely to wear the most often…and check back here to ask more specific questions. I’m sure there are many here who will have answers and are glad to help…
