Dental bone grafting for implants
Wondering about your experiences? Had lower left and right grafting /augmentation done last Friday. Left molar was already gone , but crown and wisdom tooth extracted on the right. Yes, still had one wisdom tooth. How did your gums feel one week…two weeks and a month after? The worst part is not being able to brush that back tooth and clean around the gum line on either side. Please share your experiences. How long till you got started on the implant? Any problems or suggestions? Thank you

Hi Goody. Just thought I would check to see how you are doing. If you find it difficult to chew, try eating foods that require little chewing such as fish, cheese, eggs, etc.. You can use your blender to puree meats, chicken, etc.. Smoothies come in handy during this period as well. Try brushing very lightly avoiding the areas that are still tender Rinse well. Any questions, don’t hesitate to ask..

Hello Goody1219,
I think I was very fortunate, I was told to take 3 Advil 4 times during the first day. I changed the gauze
one time, then was fine, my periodontist is very young, but proceeds on the side of cautious, so wanted
to wait 3-4 months to make sure all had time to heal and grafts time to adhere! I really did not have
anything but soreness, the antibiotics made me sicker than the extractions/grafts! Not a good diet,
to be sure!
I think my follow up was in approximately a week after, so you should let them know what you are
feeling, and ask if all is normal, at that time.
Take good care of you!

Oodiebom-(love your user name) sounds soo familar-I should add about the pain part…I’M ALWAYS ‘PUT OUT’ W/PROCEDURES! AND…I’M ONE WHO DEFINITELY NEEDS MORE THAN EXCEDRINE-I AM SO JEALOUS!!! Tho, must admit, hubby can handle pain much same way-give him Advil – he’s good to go!, green w/envy! ‘Many’ times, during these/this process…had to post-pone app’t b/c just too sensitive! I/we, (my awesome, incredible dentist- Dr. Mark McCauley, Delray Bch, Fl- and wonderful staff) have discovered- for me, it’s better to use NITROUS OXIDE-ALWAYS -AND to use ANY ‘impliments’ made in plastic-YES, they DO make them, must ask for-NOT quite as effective. My WORST PROBLEM W/DENTRISTRY in general-have OCD, cannot stand to ‘touch/see/taste/smell/hear’ metal-anything! (holding in hand/singing into microphone makes me cringe…go figure?!!) I’m the silly one who ‘often’ times, carries ‘plastic cutlery’! I know, I know, crazy huh?! lol Yep, that’s me! =) I get ‘antsy’ in waiting room just ‘hearing’ a/the drill–like fingernails down a chalkboard! And I don’t/WON’T do Xanax/anxiety meds-EVER! I’m 90lbs-did once, and felt like I was fall down drunk! lol -OCD-NEED CONTROL OF ALL MY ‘FACULTIES’! …which is hard enough when I’m LUCID…ha ha =) lol

WOW, you asked a good one-so here goes! I fall in the ‘1 in 10 million born WITHOUT wisdom teeth’ catagory! Ok, my molars/back teeth-on left upper molar (my last back) is an IMPLANT-done w/bone grafting. Same side back lower is root canal ‘crown’. I’m a vocalist by career so my teeth are pretty important to me-AND THEIR APPEARANCE-. Also, have implant w/partial bridge upper right back 2 molars-and ‘LOST THE BRIDGE PART’ during surgery (anest/hysterec)-SO UPSET-woke up w/fat lip! OMG! what I went through!! (all my mouthwork is tens thousands-REALLY DON’T HAVE! I’M A VOCALIST-BUT NOT A ‘FAMOUS’ ONE…ha ha -but as a singer, I feel I MUST — for my own security/vanity reasons) and now, b/c this particular procedure was done in the way that it was, so many yrs ago…now, in order to replace…need to have ‘bone grafting/re-building surgery (2-actually) to ‘build bone’ to support new additions-all same dentist just under 2 decades..Also, all these ‘procedures’ had root canals; and some ended w/root fractures requiring extractions w/implants or crowns to follow/replace-due to SEVERE TMJDD–and I had to ‘bone graft’, I believe it was pig bone? used. I WAS SORE FOR OVER A MONTH!!! Used the Peridex w/Q-tisp on gums for several weeks (I couldn’t open my mouth wide enough afterwards to use anything else anyway) and then a post ‘surg’ soft toothbrush and now use a special ‘nylon’ bristle toothbrush ($14.-Walgreens-only one I found soft enough) For me, it took about 3 full months to ‘feel’ normal both gums and teeth-core/bone! I was told that was rare-OK, I have R/A and rhuematologist says people w/R/A may take longer to ‘heel’ and that’s to be expected for me-as R/A is only form of arthritis that’s auto immune/and affects soft tissue. Also, have degen disc disorder and am record holder for lowest vita D-it was 4!! SO, my healing process is: I take longer–BUT heel well. My teeth/JAW are PROBLEMATIC!, to say the least. I have a collapsed jaw-NEEDS SURG. CORRECTION…leading to more dental work. VERY IMPORTANT TO HAVE THE BONE GRAFTING PROCEDURE(s) TO HELP KEEP THE ‘INTEGRITY’ OF WORK DONE *AND* FOR ANY FUTURE DENTAL WORK. I hope that helped a little. …And TO THINK… all I really wanted was ‘white’ fillings… lol AND all you wanted was info…AND you got a book…lol =) Oh, – And I have metal plates/screws cerv spine C3-C6 and had cadaver bone fushions with…took about 6 mos to feel better-w/IMMEDIATE RELIEF! GOOD LUCK TO YOU…HOPE ALL GOES WELL…

Two years ago my husband went through a similar process. He lost two or three teeth near the front and one towards the back. He first had the teeth extracted and came home with one of those ice packs. He used the electric toothbrush starting the next day and put it on the low setting. Though the gums did cause some pain he persevered. The following week he had the posts inserted. There was some discomfort for which he used Excedrin. It took about a week or ten days for him to feel better. A year later he had the teeth, The dentist felt he needed time to heal and to make sure that the bone remained intact with the posts. About a year prior to the extractions, x-rays were taken. At that time there was bone loss and he made a visit to the peridontist. There was a new procedure where bone could be made and inserted into the area needed. Three months after this procedure the bone started to show growth. He had no pain with this procedure. Hope this helps in some way and answers some questions.
