Thank you Seanchai. My dad and I had a very special bond. He was the baby of his family and I was his baby. He made sure that I got his uniforms and other memorabilia from his time in the Navy. I will pass them on to my AF son. I also have the flag and bullet casings that were presented to the family at my dad’s funeral. If anyone were to tell my dad that he was a hero, he would’ve disagreed, but in my eyes, he will always be a hero.

Wow, Star. Thank you so much for sharing this with all of us. I know it made your heart ache to write, but it was so moving to read. Bless you.

When I was a child, my grandmother told me that my father lied about his age in order to enlist in the Navy. While his brother, my uncle, was in the Aleutian Islands, my dad was assigned to the Pacific Theater. Like many that served during that time my dad was “silent” about the time he served. I grew up not realizing how big a deal it really was that my dad had served our country. As I approached high school I started asking him questions and learned that he had seen Austrailia, New Guinea, New Zealand, and that he was in Occupied Japan. One year he let me wear his white uniform for Halloween. It was an incredible experience for me!
My dad visited with me in the 80s and we got to spend some time alone. I got him to sit by my pc with me and together we unsuccessfully searched for his Navy buddies. As we searched he opened up a little bit to me and told me the names of the ships he was assigned to. It wasn’t long before my dad became teary eyed (something I had never seen) and told me that “this is too painful.” I couldn’t bear to continue asking him about his service. His stories were his and his alone.
About 10 years ago I was talking to a WW2 Navy Vet in front of a store. I sat next to him and told him how much I appreciated him. I told him about my dad’s service and how he never really spoke about experiences in the Navy. He replied that he is one of the few that is not silent and that he knows why my father wouldn’t speak of that time. He told me some very eye opening stories that I now hold dear to my heart. My dad spent time on the open sea and in battle. This man told me that he did the same and that sometimes you would be in thick smoke for long periods of time. When the smoke would clear you could see bodies floating in the water and sometimes there would be an enemy ship next to you. I hope this isn’t too graphic, but it is the reality of war.
One more thing, I have one of my grandmother’s diaries from the time my dad was in the Navy. I can’t even begin to imagine how she felt having both her sons in the military at the same time. One of her entries that really touched me was written on my dad’s birthday. You could feel the fear and sorrow in her heart as she wrote about not hearing from my dad in a long time. One entry she wrote that she wanted to see her baby so badly because he had been in some horrible battles. Letters and phone calls were few and far between.
How blessed we are today to have skype, social media, and texting!
May God bless all our brave men and women that have and are serving!
