Tracfone Samsung Grand Prime
I purchased a Samsung Grand Prime Tracfone for my son about a month ago and we transferred minutes from his old phone and he also got the same amount of data and texts added to the phone automatically. I was checking what the balance was for his minutes, texts and data and I saw that he used over 3000 mb of data. The data is turned off. The usage says he used 0. He said he has never turned the data on. How could the phone he have used all the data if it is turned off and the usage meter says that he used none? What happened to all of that data?

Plain text messages are sent over the same frequencies that voice calls use, which is one reason unlimited texting is so popular now. However, if your son attaches photos or video to his text messages, those are normally converted to send/receive over data channels. (They would take an abnormally LOOOONG time to send/receive over voice frequencies.) I don’t know how Tracfone handles those types of text messages–it could be possible that they automatically switch to data to send the text.
Turning data on/off usually just turns on/off access to the internet. Does the phone also have WiFi enabled? If it does, that could be how the phone is switching to data for these messages. Again, you’d need to check with Tracfone to see how they have their phones configured. I would also ask just what is considered “data usage” since the phone uses it with the data turned off.

My guess is it’s the default apps and software, that number shouldn’t change much if data is turned off.
