Phone for Mother-In-Law

Hi friends –

I would like to get a cell phone for my mother-in-law. She is elderly and just needs a basic flip-phone, nothing fancy. She really just needs it for emergency phone calls, she won’t be texting or using data. I’ve been looking at Tracfone options for her but don’t know if this would be the best choice – it seems expensive for what she needs, and confusing with the days, etc…. Can anyone offer a suggestion as to which phone/plan may be best for her? She averages about 200 minutes or less a month with her current phone. Thank you very much for reading and for your help.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I’ve looked in to all of your great suggestions. When it comes down to it, it looks like Tracfone is the most economical by a good margin. We are wondering if putting a 365 day card on with enough minutes would suffice for now. Even if we go that route, it looks like the cheapest way to get her a phone. There’s a Tracfone flip phone on HSN right now for under $20 with double minutes for life. It even comes with 120 minutes and 90 days. That sounds like a good deal, does anyone else think so?

I have Q Link wireless free government phone but its not a flip type:)

I suggest that you google Cell phones for seniors. I found a good Forbes article (‘3 must-have cell phones for seniors’)telling about phones with special features for Seniors. Some have larger print and louder volume. There were many other articles with great info. Also for service, check out Consumer Cellular–be sure that you go to their website and not a 3rd party one). They have discounts and specials for AARP members. I see 250 mins. for $15–that’s without the AARP discount and they have quite a few phones, some of which were the ones recommended for seniors. You might want to look at the major carriers like AT&T, Verizon, etc. You can buy a basic phone and get a basic plan for under $15 per month. You won’t have to worry about minutes expiring and any monthly minutes unused will carry over. They also offer prepaid phones and minutes which are less complicated than Tracfone. If you do not want to go into a store you can order by phone or online.

This is so interesting as I have some of these problem. No worries I have a complete blood work coming up and

a visit to my Physician. I will know in about 2 weeks. I have a concern. Hope it’s all news I can handle.
