incorrect sales tax being collected from HSN
I was hung up on by a really rude HSN employee yesterday. I was trying 4 different times to order the special of the day (tracfone). Everything would go correctly until I hit the submit order key and then the sales tax amount would climb up much higher than my state collects. I ended up talking to 5 different people and NONE of them would/could fix the problem. I was told that their tax department would have to fix it IF I made a complaint……..how many of you people don’t check your tax amount being charged after placing your order after it has been placed and changed from the amt shown before you hit the submut order key? I think the attorney generals office in Lansing Mi will find their practice interesting…….a customer has to be smart enough to catch these crooked billing practices!

According to the FAQ:
"HSN collects sales tax as required under federal and state law.
The sales tax amount displayed online is an estimate. The actual sales tax will be calculated when your order is completed and displayed on your order summary and packing slip.
Shipping and handling charges may be subject to sales tax."

I live in a county in Illinois that has one of the highest sales tax rates in the country—nearly as high as Manhattan’s. Naturally, I was not pleased when HSN began adding local sales tax to our orders.
I’ve been even less pleased to learn that the tax charged on my orders is nearly always more than it should be, and only rarely are the charges for tax correct.
I, too, have received the run-around trying to resolve this issue. Because of the flippant, and sometimes rude comments from customer service about this matter, I purchase much less frequently than I used to, and only when I truly want the product and cannot find it elsewhere.
HSN was the first home shopping network I ever watched, and I have always had a special fondness for the way things are run, and especially the hosts. Not to mention such remarkably talented vendors like Jay King, Heidi Daus, Victoria Wieck and so many others.
It saddens me to learn I am far from alone in receiving inaccurate tax charges, and, even worse, one of many who have received indifferent and careless treatment when attempting to correct the problem.
I certainlly hope HSN will resolve this problem; I would like to know we are important enough for this matter to be a priority.
By the way, anyone know why Amazon is the only major online seller not to charge sales tax?

All the shopping channels are charging tax on shipping unless the item is sold as free shipping. My wife questioned why the tax ON SHIPPING. She pays out of pocket to send return items back because it’s cheaper than the return label.. The post office. UPS or fe ex don’t charge tax for returning an item. Why is HSN and the other shopping channels charging tax on shipping to send it to you?….Ronnie

I just went back through some of my orders (so far only as far back as Sept.) and found out I’ve been paying tax on shipping & handling. Why? Shouldn’t the tax be applied to just the item? Thank you mimigook and sheeshles for bringing this to my attention. So hsn what now?

Just wanted to clarify—– I ALWAYS order online. I never phone in an order. Since (approx) Sept 1, 2015, I have been charged sales tax. (Furthermore, I am charged tax on the S&H.)
ATTENTION:KIM!!!
******Kim— I would appreciate if you would address this issue, as well.*******
Ryan—-your reply clearly indicates you did understand my situation and the plain fact that I have been promised several times that HSN was ‘right on it’, sending it to the tax department, etc. My last contact—- after writing a long email and receiving a reply from Lance that he would resolve the issue promptly—was from a female who requested that I do the legwork, asked me to specify a matter that I had mentioned in the email to which she was replying (not Lance), and her tone was semi-rude. I did provide her an example of an order (later returned, but an order easy to calculate tax) for pennies away from 100$. Tax should be pennies off 6.00 (6% in my state). It was approx 8.00$, and that is approx 8%.
I seriously never complain, but feel I have been lied to/misled/pushed to the brink. When Velveteen Rabbit cannot solve an HSN error, I know I am in a run for my money (pardon the pun)!!!

I never get charged tax, because I was told by an operator to use computer to order and would not be charged sales tax….So I alway oder by computer… And then no tax…

This happened to me on Friday when I had to call in an order after having an issue with ordering online. The Customer Service rep insisted the difference in to all order by phone vs. online was there was a higher tax by not ordering online. There was a $9.00 on a $100 order! I tried the last two days, to no avail, to get this corrected.

Kim,
Thanks for the quick reply. I really hope this will be resolved—-I have been assured that the correct department and appropriate research were the next step several times……
I truly trust any monies due me will be credited to my HSN card. Additionally, will the correct tax be applied in the future? Not to be ‘mean’, but the reply should be yes! What is HSN’s procedure and/or written policy regarding this? I really do not want to make this a part time job. Trust you understand, Kim!!
Thanks and look forward to another reply from you,.

I have been charged incorrect sales tax for months. I spent a lot of time explaining my situation to several representatives. I indicated which orders this had to do with. I was told everything from "it’s not HSN’s problem….it is the customer’s" to "you are incorrect in thinking that the sales tax for MI is 6%" to "you will be contacted in 5-7 days" to "this will be submitted to our tax department who will contact you in a week", etc.
I, too, noticed that a 100.00 item had a 8.00 tax attached======easy to calculate, especially since there was no S&H.
After never being contacted, I used the email link and was assured by Lance that he would be handling my case and was sorry. Within a day, another individual wrote back. She demanded that I once again submitted all order numbers, how far this went back, etc.
Firstly, I have taken HSN for their word regarding promises to solve this.
Secondly, I have submitted order numbers several times.
Thirdly, Surely HSN has all of my info regarding orders…..after all it’s a click away on my HSN.com.
I could go on and on, but I feel it is ridiculous to put me through hoops, ask me to file with the State Tax Board (who said it was a pain and asked whether I wanted to report HSN or find out about classaction suits, etc)
I’ve used (easily) several months of cellphone minutes.
PLS HELP ME!! THIS IS ILLEGAL AND IS NO LONGER AN INADVERTANT ERROR ON HSN’S PART.
THANKS KINDLY,
A LONGTIME CUSTOMER WHO HAS ORDERED THOUSANDS OF $ OF PRODUCT.

, I’ve submit a request to have our Tax Department review your 2 orders from yesterday to ensure that you’re charged the proper amount of tax for your order. Please allow up to 3 business days for this process to be completed. Thanks for your patience!
