Very cool! I have a few old Christmas and gardening/flower basket pieces of chalk ware, but it’s very hard to find pieces in the far north of the Upper Midwest. Even badly damaged pieces seem pretty rare, of course, I think carnivals traveled through once, maybe twice, a year. Were these pieces more common in certain regions, or resort areas with permanent carnival sites?
As an aside, there used to be quite a bit of circus memorabilia about, as several had headquarters in southern Wisconsin (e.g.,Circus World in Baraboo). Of course, I think they all wintered in Florida, but I could be wrong. Saw lots of ephemera, and some huge, spectacular, and pristine circus posters, Just incredible graphics and printing (lithography?)

Very cool! I have never seen these.

I find this very interesting because my father was a Carny…In fact, that is why my mother and father got divorced. My mother wanted no part of that life. Anyway, The carnival chalkware was used mostly at what the Carny’s called “percentage joints”. What that meant was the prize was not worth what it cost you to play. Most of that chalkware cost the carny between 5 & 10 cents a piece when bought in bulk and it would cost you at least a quarter to win it. I remember it well when traveling with my dad in the summers of the 1950’s . I am sure it is worth a lot more today….:manhappy:

FBN … I find your story very interesting 🙂 Mine started with a small collie dog I found at a Flea Market……….
I have some I bought from a lady that were in her house fire … they survived quite well and are all written on the bottom where they are from and the dates 🙂 When I first started collecting, I never realized how many different ones there are :womanlol: I love the hunt ! Yes, I would say they are worth more than 5 or 10 cents now LOL Did you get any from traveling with your Dad?
-
No I never kept any of it. A young boy did not do things like that back in my day….. That was for the girls to do…:manhappy: I wish now I would have collected some of it…..

? – Your collection is fascinating…I have never seen Carnival Chalkware and really appreciate hearing and learning about it. It reminds me of my mother’s oldest brother out of 8 siblings. He was the only boy when he ran away to join the circus at age 15. He didn’t want to work on the family’s dairy farm any longer. The family was broken hearted and never heard from him again. Shortly before my mother died we traced him to a town outside Houston and found that he had passed a few years earlier from a car accident. And listed on the death certificate was his occupation…dairy farm owner!
